![]() ![]() Little by little, board games have been growing up, encompassing new ideas and new spheres of empathy and expression. And I grew up a Cubs fan, so I was genetically preprogrammed to deal with loss - shapeless, overwhelming loss.Gimmicks. I don't have the slightest answer for how to handle these situations when you're playing games with kids, and anyone claiming to is trying to get you to either click on a headline or invite them to share their hard-line old-school Strict Parenting Techniques at a conference. (Don't get me started on the kid down the street and his super-questionable approach to Super Smash Bros.) But watching your children cheat in front of you has the curious effect of making one rethink his entire approach to games, sports and life in general. Most children are maniacally driven to win, of course, and I'm certainly not raising the only two shifty-eyed tricksters in town. I think I got the point across, which was weird, as I had to do so in a game involving werewolves and seers and robbers. Needless to say, this resulted in a lively and colorful series of discussions about fairness and ethics, and why we won't be playing the Werewolf game in the next six years. (For the record, I caught this because my role in the game allowed me to have my eyes open, where I could easily keep an eye on my shady, nefarious offspring.) The other went with the ol' fluttery-eyelid approach. They cheated in different ways: One covered his eyes with his hands, but spread his fingers apart ever so slightly. We are bad enough at losing that last week I caught both kids cheating, independently of each other, attempting to peek in a game that requires some players to keep their eyes closed. We are bad at losing presidential elections (okay, that one's true for everyone). We are bad at losing backyard cornhole games to Dad. We are bad at losing karate competitions. We are bad at watching the Cubs lose on TV. Because with my kids now 14 and 6, I'm pretty sure it has contributed to this curious result: We are really bad at losing. I don't mind losing to someone who is better than me - which is, incidentally, what I thought after pretty much every Little League game.īut I should have established some system for such games, particularly back when I maintained the ability to keep an upper hand at some of them. There's a game called Blokus that I've lost, regularly and badly, to a person who routinely puts his shirts on backward and ends 85 percent of dinners by falling out of his chair. ![]() Sometimes he beats me at things outright, and that's fantastic. There is little rhyme or reason to these decisions, which depend essentially on how I'm feeling and how snippy my son has been lately about screen time. At other times I'll decide that I must use this friendly game of Ticket to Ride: New York to teach him that life is an ever-stretching mosaic of boundless disappointment, and that he must begin to navigate it immediately by dealing with how I blocked his route from Central Park to Greenwich Village. Sometimes I'll take a dive in Battleship, levy an off-base accusation in Clue or make a deliberately lousy chess move to let the little people stay a competitive step ahead (and keep the game moving). On the whole, we have yet to establish a consistent routine about this winning-and-losing situation, and my inconsistency is clearly making a tricky situation worse. (In my defense, there is zero strategy to Chutes and Ladders - and that dude had no idea what he was doing.) Should you let your children win at board games? Actually, let me rephrase that: Should you let your children win at board games if you can beat them at board games? Because, frankly, I lost a startling number of Chutes and Ladders games to my son when he was 5 years old. Do you let you children win at games you could easily win yourself? Photo / 123rf ![]() ![]() ![]() You can get it for $84.99 for a lifetime license (no subscription required), and it’s one of the most affordable image editors available that still provides high-quality editing tools. You might spend a bit more time learning GIMP than a paid program, but even still, it’s hard to beat the low price of free.Īffinity Photo is still an amazing deal for a professional-level image editing program. As a result, it provides virtually unlimited value for your non-existent dollar. GIMP is free, open-source software – it always has been, and it always will be. GIMP has extensive tutorials available online (like this one!), and just a little bit of guidance within the program for new users would level the playing field quite a bit. Affinity Photo’s on-screen and online tutorials are quite well done, but more importantly, they’re actually accessible from within the app, which gives it the edge in this category. GIMP does have a large online tutorial that helps the community, but it’s not as easy to find. I assume this is to save space, but I have a hard time seeing how it could possibly be worth it. In stark contrast, GIMP doesn’t even install its own help documentation by default on your computer. The screen loads each time Affinity Photo does, in case you need any guidance – though it can be disabled with a checkbox if you don’t need it Both GIMP and Affinity Photo have extensive online documentation, but Affinity Photo actually goes out of its way to introduce you to them and show you where to find them (see below). Image editing programs are large and complex, and it can be intimidating to start the learning process when there’s so much to cover. That being said, Affinity Photo’s emphasis on being user-friendly still pays off throughout the interface, and a handy introductory guide after the loading screen gives users a bit of instruction the first time they run the app (and in the future, if you want). ![]() Within each Persona, you can still move and adjust most sections of the interface, but not with the same flexibility that GIMP offers. The Persona tabs are located in the upper left corner of the Affinity Photo interfaceĪffinity Photo splits its interface into several different modules called Personas, which limits some of the customization options of the interface. It doesn’t allow editing multiple layers at once, and it doesn’t support any kind of non-destructive adjustments beyond basic layer masking. While both GIMP and Affinity Photo offer multi-layer editing for advanced compositing, GIMP’s layer support leaves a lot to be desired. Both GIMP and Affinity Photo have an excellent core of editing tools that are responsive and simple to use. I personally prefer the way that Affinity Photo handles them in terms of settings and general layout, but GIMP’s tools are just as capable and customizable – though a bit less user-friendly. ![]() Cloning and healing, Curves adjustments, and sharpening are a few examples of the kind of essential, everyday tools that fit in this category.Īs a result of this even balance, there isn’t actually all that much to say about the basic editing tools. Basic Editing Toolsįortunately, this comparison is easy because both programs handle basic editing very well. A Closer Look at Affinity Photo and GIMPįor this comparison, I’m going to take a look at the following seven areas of each program and decide which of the two is most effective: That’s the short version of the comparison, but you can read on for a more in-depth look at how GIMP and Affinity Photo stack up in terms of editing capabilities, workflow, and user experience. It also works well with Serif’s other graphics programs, which are apparently known as the ‘Affinity trinity’: Affinity Designer for creating and editing vector graphics, and Affinity Publisher for page layout and document creation. It features all the fancy tools you’ll want for professional image editings like dynamic adjustment layers, built-in RAW photo support, PSD format support, and full-color management support, along with some fun features like panorama stitching, focus stacking, and HDR image merging.Īffinity Photo isn’t free, but the low purchase price of $84.99 one-time purchase (or $23.99 on iPad) provides excellent value compared to a monthly subscription. Some may find the story line a bit predictable, but the artistic way in which we are told the story-part in flashback, part in real time, not in a direct linear fashion-more than makes up for that.Facts Swiss actress Carla Juri is best known for portraying the leading role of ‘Helen Memel’ in the 2013 film adaptation of Wetlands. Even better if you have a bit of an ear for German dialects, as the peculiarities of Swiss German come across repeatedly and are quite entertaining. If you can live with subtitles, this is a very rewarding movie to watch. It's a typically anti-Hollywood movie: with depth, sensitivity, creativity, and a strong sense of historical verisimilitude, all artfully and skillfully shot and on a minimal budget. We see how this first relationship set the stage for his later attempts to find love as a mature young man. A small but I think important subplot was the relationship between Kari and his mother, who nursed him to health as an infant and loved him dearly, a love reciprocated by Kari. We can read all their internal emotions in their facial expressions, glances, etc. It's a story about someone who tries to overcome the bad hand that fate has dealt him, is not entirely successful, and yet in later years can look back on that episode with mingled bittersweet feelings, without anger towards his fellow human beings but as a very well-adjusted person who is dearly loved by his circle of intimates. But the strength of this movie is in its story and the three lead actors who do a fantastic job portraying the two main characters (because we see Kari as both a young man and an older man). The individual vignettes of life in the rural and then urban settings are quite charming, though not always pleasant or pretty. The story is set around the late 1800s in Switzerland, and is presented in German. The main story revolved around his attempts to court a beautiful young girl who takes an interest in him, but her family of course is not quite as accepting of his defects and simple upbringing. We see him at birth, as a young boy, as a 20-something year old young man, and then again as a mature older man. We are given the story in little bits, not in chronological order, but after a while one starts to piece things together readily enough. This is a small, simple movie about a boy, Kari, born with a cleft lip and his life of trying to deal with this defect and achieve happiness in spite of it. Happened to catch this on a plane ride, and I'm so glad I did. ![]() ![]() What can we expect when it comes to the tournament itself? Any epic game can upset this record, but you’ve got to play the odds. Most Last Hits In A Single Game has got to go to Terrorblade, who has appeared in five of the top eight Last Hit records in this patch, and three of the top eight in the LCQ. Tinker could be a stompy hero who I could back – but I don’t think it will be picked five times (as good Tinker players will have it banned against them too much). Templar Assassin, Ursa, and a more active Lina could take this but Templar Assassin has the edge. Terrorblade is more likely to win, but only marginally.įor Highest XPM, my choice has got to be some ancient-killing fiend. ![]() I’ll trust the statistics on this and go with Slark.įor Highest Average Last Hits, if Medusa were more commonly picked she might be viable, but this seems more of a decision between Terrorblade and Templar Assassin for now. I’m going with Clockwerk, a commonly picked hero who can earn many kills throughout the game and is reasonably commonly picked.įor Lowest Death Average, once again, there are a few decent options: Slark and Morphling are my favourites but I could be convinced to get behind Lifestealer or Lycan. Io and Clockwerk in longer games can alsogain plenty of assists. Skywrath Mage, Dark Willow, Chen, and Spirit Breaker represent good value also. ![]() Disruptor has been doing well, but is also a favourite of many of the better LCQ teams. I’ll go with Ember for Highest Kill Average, and Sniper for Most Kills In A Single Game.Īverage Assists is a tricky category, there are so many viable options. For kills in a single game, I like Tinker, Sniper, or once again Ember. Other niche picks perhaps are Anti-Mage or Necrophos – both have been banned but remain unpicked in the LCQs so far.įor highest kills average, I like Ursa, Slark, Morphling, and Ember. I’ll go with Pudge, who’s 2-0 in the second phase and 7-1 in the third phase. I’ll go for Enigma as the Most Banned Hero - this hero invokes such fear for so many teams, I’m sure it will remain highly banned.Ĭhoosing which hero will have the Highest Win Rate With Five+ Games is always a risky matter – the logic is that you want some busted hero which you expect to be banned a lot (like Enigma and Marci) or some third-phase gotcha pick (Slark/Ursa/Pudge) – but there aren’t that many really. Almost every top team has an excellent Enigma player, so I would imagine this is more of a Marci/Enigma battle. Marci has been the most banned hero (and the most overall picked or banned hero – not once ignored in a draft), followed by Enigma and Batrider. However, I’ll begrudgingly go with Undying for Most Picked Hero. If Undying starts being banned a bit more, Tusk or Earthshaker could get picked more and more. Marci would be a contender here if she wasn’t banned so frequently. Undying has been picked in nearly half of the LCQ games, with Shadow Fiend a small distance behind. ![]() Sign up Log in What are my hero predictions? ![]() ![]() ![]() And Torque is a camper’s dream, as he can set up a microwave barricade and drop razor wire under windows as though he were from another time period. Ajax has one of those horrible, impenetrable riot shields with a super-mega flashbang. Recon has a sensor pulse and x-ray vision to show where enemies are located. Crash can drop special ammo and boost the health of all teammates. New Specialists focus more on team benefits and defense. Since all equipment has a cooldown, there is no grenade spam, which is fantastic. If you want to use a regular frag grenade (perish the thought), you must be level 42 and will need to give up one customization point. Prophet has a seeker bot that gets stuck on objects as it twirls around looking for enemies to incapacitate and Firebreak has a radioactive core for sustained and through-wall area damage. Unlike BO3, each character gets a unique piece of equipment that takes up the grenade slot. Battery still has her grenade launcher, Ruin has his ground-pound thingamajig, and Seraph has her sweet one-hit-kill revolver. Out of the ten Specialists, six are younger versions of those found in Black Ops 3. The Pick-10 system allows this type of customization, although there are some caveats when it comes to the Specialist loadouts. If you never plan on retreating, you can opt to reduce self-healing to gain benefits from other items, like armor or an acoustic sensor. Do you retreat and heal or attack and catch the enemy off guard? Healing will become second nature, just like reloading. Paired with higher time-to-kill, this elongates encounters and adds another tactical layer. One big change to the combat is needing to manually heal after taking damage. This time you can heal yourself and make the strawberry jelly go away Apart from TDM and Kill Confirmed, which are both 6v6, all modes have been reduced to 5v5 which, surprisingly, provides enough action because players have unlimited sprint and maps are compact. In lopsided matches, scorestreaks snowball and the imbalance increases. Many prominent franchise scorestreaks reappear, including the wheeled RC-XD from BO1, which is not easy to control this time around. Modes staple to the series are back, including TDM, FFA, Kill Confirmed, Search & Destroy, Domination, and Hardpoint-no CTF this year. Most of the Specialist characters return, with their unique hero-like abilities, but wall-running and boost jumping have been culled in order to appease the ground-huggers. Traditional competitive multiplayer is a devolution of Black Ops 3 and not just technologically. It is best to ignore the story and bow down to the king of the hill-multiplayer. And the narrative itself is just a prologue mixed with clichéd back story told via unengaging CGI cutscenes. Unfortunately the AI bots are abysmal at navigating the levels and pose no threat. There is a “story” paired with tutorials and bot matches for each of the multiplayer Specialists. Some players enjoyed the narrative too, but that part is not completely gone. So it is disappointing that the fourth entry lacks the bombastic set pieces. Even the third game offered a co-operative campaign, albeit with a convoluted story. The sequel continued this and brought in branching paths. The first Black Ops game had a great story and awesome pacing. ![]() There is no campaign in Black Ops 4, which is strange given Treyarch’s accomplishments in this area. This may suggest that he's not actually dead or some other big conspiracy that connects back to Black Ops Cold War, a game that takes place roughly ten years before the Gulf War.Fans of single player will be spitting fire The video also features some voice over from Adler, a character from Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, noting that Perseus (the latter game's antagonist's villain) is dead. ![]() A new video from Call of Duty insider RalphsValve features real footage from what appears to be the Gulf War/Operation Desert Storm, a war that happened in the early 1990s. This would be interesting given this would sort of veer into the topics and settings of the Modern Warfare series, but there may be a bit more to set it apart. Some leaks have suggested the game will revolve around the Iraq war, but that's about all we actually know. We have no official word on what Treyarch's next Call of Duty game will be, but it is expected to release next year. Treyarch has consistently been producing Black Ops games since 2010 and although it has gone in some wildly differing directions by going to the far-flung future with jetpacks and wall-running, the last entry was a return to the franchise's roots. Call of Duty has been a pretty well-oiled machine for two decades now with the series truly finding its rhythm in the late 2000s and early 2010s when it opted to create sub franchises like Modern Warfare and Black Ops.
